Manuka Honey - Health Benefits


This honey has been tested on streptococcus and pseudomanades (bacteria) and it has been found that it does not allow bacteria to adhere to tissues, which is very important from the point of view of developing an acute infection, and also blocks the formation of biofilms that protect bacteria from antibiotics.



What is included in the manuka honey?


The most important component that manuka honey provides with healing properties is methylglyoxal (MGO).

This substance is present in every variety of honey, but it is in manuka that its highest concentration is contained.

This methylglyoxal is formed by the transformation of another component - dihydroacetone, which is found in large quantities in the flowers of the manuka tree.


By penetrating the affected cell, methylglyoxal produces hydrogen peroxide in a concentration that evaporates fluid from the cell, thus depriving the bacteria of food and destroying them.

After that, the fluid balance is restored, the cell returns to normal, and the bacteria die.

The more methylglyoxal in honey, the more pronounced its antibacterial effect

 



Manuka Honey Efficiency Scale

To do this, manufacturers have developed a special scale of the effectiveness of manuka-honey.

It is abbreviated as UMF (Unique Manuka Factor or Unique Manuka Factor).

The higher the UMF, the stronger the therapeutic effects of manuka honey.

Usually this activity is indicated on the honey label.

Activity 5+ - neutral; 10+ - medium, 15+ - high; 20+ - the highest; 25+ - superactive.
