Food for thought.

Out of all the manuka honey I see on the market, it all comes in plastic containers. Why is that? Dark coloured glass jars do exist and price does not appear to be deterrent to this niche clientele buying $50-$200 jars of honey. You hear about plastics altering the contents of other products and I would expect the best container for the best medical grade honey.

Hi Michael,
Thank you for your thoughtful question — it’s a very good one.

Many premium Manuka honey producers use food-grade PET plastic containers rather than glass for several practical reasons. First, plastic jars are much lighter and more resistant to breakage, which is important when shipping honey internationally and protecting the product during transport.

Another reason is UV protection. High-quality Manuka honey is sensitive to light, which can affect some of its natural properties over time. Many Manuka jars are made from special UV-blocking plastic, designed specifically to protect the honey from light exposure.

In addition, food-grade PET containers used for honey are certified safe for food contact and do not react with honey under normal storage conditions. They are widely used in the honey industry and meet strict food safety standards.

That said, glass is certainly an excellent material as well, and some specialty honeys are packaged in glass jars. Each producer chooses packaging based on factors such as product protection, transport safety, weight, and sustainability considerations.

Regardless of the container, the most important factors are authenticity, proper certification, and careful handling of the honey.

We always appreciate questions like yours — thank you for your interest in quality honey!
